Austrian far-right loses ground when Sebastian Kurz wins

The People's Party of former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) has won a landslide victory in the early parliamentary elections in Austria.
Kurz's party won 37.1% of the vote on Sunday - an increase of 5.7 percentage points compared to the 2017 poll.
The far-right Freedom Party (FP) suffered a worse-than-expected loss, dropping by almost 10 percentage points to about 16%, indicating that the party's reputation may have suffered after a corruption scandal earlier this year.
The center-left Social Democrats (SPO) dropped five percentage points to about 22%, the party's worst result since World War II.
The Greens gained 10.2 points and reached 14%, which increases the likelihood of a coalition between the VP and the Greens.
About 6.4 million Austrians were eligible to vote in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

The Ibiza Scandal
The vote followed the collapse in May of Kurz's coalition with the FP following the video Sting scandal, which forced the party's vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache to resign. The footage, shot secretly on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza, shows that Strache offered government contracts in exchange for campaign assistance from a fake Russian sponsor.
Kurz, 33, emerged largely unscathed from the FP scandal, even gaining voters from FP as his support dropped to about a fifth of the electorate just over a quarter in the last vote in 2017. On the left, there has been some shift in support from the Social Democrats (SPO) to the resurgent Greens.
Possible coalition partners
"I'm afraid that this time the coalition negotiations will be a little more complicated," Kurz said on Monday, referring to the relatively smooth negotiations with FP that followed the 2017 elections.
The former chancellor noted that he will not rush to determine which party or parties with which the VP will be ready to enter into coalition negotiations. "Of course, we will strive to negotiate with all parties and try to determine which parties there is a match with which parties a stable government can be formed", - said the VP leader.
He also condemned calls by German commentators that he should avoid a new pact with the far right. "I don't think we need advice from abroad, including from Germany," he said.
